Gaviscon Infant Sachets 30 Sachets
Reflux Suppressant for Gastric Regurgitation & Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux in Infants
Gaviscon Infant is a pharmacy-only, non-prescription medicine used for gastric regurgitation, gastro-oesophageal reflux and reflux associated with hiatus hernia in infants and young children. Each sachet contains sodium alginate 225mg and magnesium alginate 87.5mg, which work by stabilising and thickening the stomach contents to help prevent reflux and regurgitation.
Overview
Gaviscon Infant is a powder for oral suspension specifically formulated for infants and young children with reflux and regurgitation.
The active ingredients, sodium alginate and magnesium alginate, react in the stomach to form a gel that stabilises the stomach contents. This helps reduce reflux of the stomach contents into the oesophagus and the associated bringing up of feeds.
The HPRA-licensed indications are gastric regurgitation, gastro-oesophageal reflux and reflux associated with hiatus hernia in infants and young children.
Gaviscon Infant is a pharmacy-only medicine in Ireland and is not subject to medical prescription.
Always read the label.

Why Choose This Product
Gaviscon Infant is specifically formulated for infant reflux rather than being an adult Gaviscon product given at a smaller dose.
Each unit-dose sachet contains:
- Sodium alginate 225mg
- Magnesium alginate 87.5mg
The powder is mixed immediately before use, with preparation depending on whether the infant is breast-fed or bottle-fed.
It is also an authorised pharmacy-only medicine in Ireland, meaning it can be supplied without a prescription through a pharmacy.
Helpful Product Information
Gaviscon Infant works differently from adult Gaviscon products containing antacids.
Its alginate ingredients form a gel in the stomach and stabilise the stomach contents, reducing the tendency of feeds to reflux back into the oesophagus.
Correct preparation is important. The sachet should be mixed immediately before use according to whether the infant is breast-fed or bottle-fed.
Gaviscon Infant should not be added to feeds already thickened with another thickening agent unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional.
If symptoms worsen or persist for more than 7 days, medical advice should be sought.
Trust & Pharmacist Advice
Reflux and bringing up feeds are common during infancy, but persistent symptoms should be appropriately assessed.
Speak to your pharmacist, GP or public health nurse if your baby is having difficulty feeding, appears distressed during feeds, is not gaining weight as expected or has persistent reflux symptoms.
Seek prompt medical assessment if an infant has blood or green material in vomit, forceful or projectile vomiting, feeding difficulties, dehydration, breathing problems, marked lethargy or appears significantly unwell.
Gaviscon Infant should not be used in premature infants except under medical supervision.
It must also not be used in infants with known or suspected impaired kidney function.
Not Suitable For
Gaviscon Infant should not be used:
- In premature infants except under medical supervision
- In infants under 1 year except under medical supervision
- In children over 2 years
- In adults or elderly people
- In infants with known or suspected impairment of kidney function
- If the infant is allergic to sodium alginate, magnesium alginate or another ingredient
- More than 6 times within any 24-hour period
Seek professional advice if your baby is already receiving a feed thickener or another treatment for reflux.
